Knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown (never the root), rinse gently without scrubbing off any tissue, and try to reinsert it into the socket immediately if possible - if you cannot, place it in a cup of milk or your own saliva and call us right away, since a tooth has the best chance of being saved if reinserted within an hour. Severe toothache: rinse with warm water, gently floss around the tooth to rule out trapped food, and call us; avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, which can burn the tissue.
Broken or chipped tooth: rinse your mouth and save any broken pieces if you can find them, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and call us even if it is not painful, since a hidden crack can lead to infection later. Lost filling or crown: keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and if you still have the crown, over-the-counter dental cement can temporarily hold it in place until your appointment. In every case, calling first gets you the fastest, safest guidance.
